English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program at Green River Community College serves immigrant and refugee students. The program offers English classes in five levels and other support classes. There are classes in the morning, afternoon, and evening on the main campus and sites in Kent and Auburn. For more information about English for Speakers of Other Languages, call (253) 833-9111 and then press extension 2315 to talk with staff in the office of Basic Skills who will help you to sign up for the test you must take before starting classes.

Cost

$30.00 per quarter Note: All ESOL students pay a $25.00 per quarter fee to the college and another $5.00 materials fee per quarter. The maximum charge to any ESOL student is $30.00 per quarter.

Requirements

This ESOL program for refugees, immigrants, permanent residents, or U.S. citizens is different from the International ESL (IESL) Program for international students. Individuals with tourist or foreign student visas cannot take these classes. Students between 16 and 19 years old must get a Release of Student form from their high school before they can register for these classes. Class Times and Locations

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes meet at various times at sites in Auburn, Kent, Enumclaw, and on the main campus. See the quarterly class schedule for specific times and locations.

Courses

010 ESOL LEVEL 1A
This class is for students who have limited or no literacy skills in their own languages.

011 ESOL LEVEL ONE
This is a low-beginning level course. Students learn letters, numbers and begin to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

020 ESOL LEVEL TWO
This is a high-beginning level course. Students learn the basic level of English needed to communicate in daily life. All language skills are taught.

030 ESOL LEVEL THREE
This is a low-intermediate level course. Students improve their ability to communicate in English in everyday life. All language skills are taught.

070 ESOL LEVEL FOUR (Speaking/Listening)
This is a high-intermediate level course. The emphasis is on the speaking and listening skills needed by students in their roles as parents, workers, students and citizens.

071 ESOL LEVEL FOUR (Reading/Writing)
This is a high-intermediate level course. The emphasis is on the reading and writing skills needed by students in their roles as parents, workers, students and citizens.

080 ESOL LEVEL FIVE (Speaking/Listening)
This is a low-advanced level course. The emphasis is on the speaking and listening skills needed by students in their roles as parents, workers, students and citizens.

081 ESOL LEVEL FIVE (Reading/Writing)
This is a low-advanced level course. The emphasis is on the reading and writing skills needed by students in their roles as parents, workers, students and citizens.

Additional Classes:

053-55 TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANT LANGUAGE LEARNING
This course provides students at levels 3, 4 & 5 opportunities to learn and use English through technology. Students also learn the basic computing skills needed for today’s workforce. Students study individually with the instructor, in small groups, and together as a whole class.

057-9WRITING SUPPORT
This course provides students at levels 3, 4 & 5 another opportunity to improve writing skills.

040-3 PREPARATION FOR CITIZENSHIP CLASS
This class will assist you in preparing for the U.S. naturalization examination and interview. The focus is on correctly completing the application, studying the materials necessary to pass the interview and examination, and practicing examination/interview skills.
