S-STEM Scholarships
Student Testimonials
Here is what some of our students had to say about the scholarship:
Dana Biggerstaff: Civil Engineering
For me the CSEMS program is why I ended up choosing
Civil Engineering as a career. I originally wanted to
do Geology but thought if I was getting an engineering
scholarship I should probably look into that first.
I ended up not only liking the subject, but the people
at GRCC. They are also what made the program so great.
The money was great, but so was knowing all of the support
was there in case I needed anything. I think that was
more important. After all, my son did go through cancer
treatment in the time I was at Green River, and I was
able to still get through my classes.
Kathie Marquardt: Design Drafting Technology
I can’t say enough about what this scholarship has
meant to me. It gave me an opportunity for an education
I never had before. It gave me the means to complete
the leap of faith that I took just by starting. It was
confirmation that someone believed in me; … believed
I was smart enough, and it helped me believe I was smart
enough. I am grateful for excellent instructors, Felix
Serna in particular, for his confidence and encouragement
and professionalism. I feel like I’m at an academy award
or something and I should be holding a statue! But without
this scholarship, I would not be standing here, at 49,
making plans to walk in a commencement ceremony for
the first time in my life. Thank you, National Science
Foundation and Green River Community College; thank
you.
Anna St. Martin : Civil Engineering
It was a great blessing to complete community/junior
college with no debt. It allowed me to enroll in a private
college to complete my undergraduate education with
less debt than many of my colleagues. I also appreciated
the support that faculty gave to me while I was a CSEMS
(pre S-STEM) scholar. The requirement to review progress,
compile examples of my scholastic work, and engage in
non-curricular activities related to my field, helped
me expand my experience and track my progress... I appreciate the solid
foundation I received at GRCC, and think that the level
of support offered by the faculty made a huge difference
in how I felt about college.

S-STEM is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
