Headwaters Mentor Project
The Headwaters Mentor Project is a part of the AmeriCorps Retention Project, a Washington Campus Compact program designed to garner student interest in college, particularly amongst populations of students at risk of dropping out of school.
The Headwaters Mentor Project serves two populations of students: Local middle school students and GRCC Basic Skills students. Our program contains two components tailored to the issues and concerns facing the populations that we will be working with. The first component of our program aims to help students learn as much as possible about college requirements, financial aid, degree planning, and career development. The second provides academic students in college with the opportunity to volunteer and help make a difference in the lives of others as mentors.

Winter quarter mentor applications are due Tuesday, January 24th, by 5:00 p.m.
Basic Skills Mentoring
Our Basic Skills mentors work with the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) students at GRCC. Students participating in our mentoring program receive one-on-one guidance and advice for navigating the transition from basic skills to college-level courses. During our "Families for Successful Futures" series, we also host family-friendly quarterly workshops focusing on different aspects of the college-planning process.

I am returning for a second year as the Basic Skills Mentor Coordinator for the Headwaters Mentor Project. The program’s aim is to help students in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and GED classes make the transition to technical or professional programs and college-level courses. An alumnus of Green River Community College, I transferred to Western Washington University with an associate’s degree and went on to earn my bachelor’s degree in English Literature. While at GRCC, I worked as an Intensive English as a Second Language (IESL) tutor and as an office assistant for International Programs. I have served my community in the past by raising funds for my college rugby team, participating in Relay for Life and volunteering with a YMCA summer camp. I recently volunteered abroad, teaching English at a primary school in Thailand. After my service with AmeriCorps, I plan to pursue post-graduate studies and work in a social justice-related field. I love being part of the GRCC community, and am looking forward to a productive year.
Middle School Mentoring
Our middle school mentors work with students after school on two local middle school campuses to target students who are at risk of dropping out of school in the future. These students are paired with mentors to guide and encourage them to continue the advancement of their education. The program has a strong emphasis on college awareness and career exploration. Students and mentors participate in college and career-themed activities geared at enlightening students about how to make their dreams of college a reality.

Hello! My name is Brianne Rokey, and I am the Middle School Mentor Coordinator here. I recently graduated from California State University–Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in anthropology. During my undergraduate career, I was a Peer Advisor in CSULB’s Psychology Department. I advised fellow psychology students on academic issues, as well as career and graduate school information. I developed an interest in community service, so I regularly volunteered at a local Boys and Girls Club, CSP Youth Shelter, and in a first grade classroom at a local elementary school. I also took part in various service events such as AIDS Walk Los Angeles, local beach clean-ups, and at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. After my term of service with AmeriCorps is completed, I am looking to enter a graduate program for school psychology so that I can eventually become a licensed school psychologist. I am excited to be able to immerse myself in the culture of GRCC, and I am looking forward to an innovative and successful first year of the Headwaters Mentor Project!
