Campus Resources Here’s a quick tour through campus, explaining the services that help you take care of business.
Bookstore – “The Paper Tree” Find out the hours of operation for the Paper Tree In addition to carrying new and used textbooks, The Paper Tree stocks reference books, general interest books, art and engineering supplies, and computer software. You can also order your textbooks online. The Paper Tree offers a variety of services--from fax capabilities to video movie rentals. Faxes cost $1.00 per page. Convenient overnight video rental of current or classic movie releases is available for $2.50 per rental. All movie rentals are due back on Mondays. DVD & VHS movies are available. The textbook buy-back during final exams each quarter allows you to sell books you no longer need. Texts that the bookstore needs will be bought back at 50 percent of the current list price. Other texts might be bought back at wholesale prices. We also offer a year-round wholesale buy. Refunds will be made on texts during the first 15 days of each quarter, supplies and sundries up to 30 days, software 5 days if unopened from purchase (except summer quarter). Items returned must be in original purchase condition to receive a full refund. You’ll receive a full refund of the purchase price if the college cancels the class or you withdraw from the class and you meet the refund requirements. Receipts are required for all refunds. The bookstore has the right to refuse any item for refund.
Cafeteria “Gator Grille Cafe” Find out the hours of operation for the Gator Grille Conveniently situated across from the auditorium and open dining areas, the cafeteria offers a variety of food service options – from hot lunch specials, burgers, sandwiches, and salads to hot and cold beverages and pastries, plus so much more – all at reasonable prices. Vending machines in the LSC supply sodas and snacks any time the building is open and an espresso cart is located just outside the cafeteria (hours vary).
Cashier’s Office Find out the hours of operation for the Cashier's Office The Cashier’s Office provides the following services:
Child Development Center GRCC’s Child Development Center welcomes children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. The center is operated by the Children’s Home Society of Washington and can serve 64 children in its five classrooms. Childcare subsidies are accepted and scholarship assistance is available. Early Head Start and Head Start services are available for families meeting enrollment qualifications. The center has an open door policy and families are welcome to visit at any time. Hours:
Computer Access GRCC’s open computer lab is in the Holman Library. Library hours are posted at www.greenriver.edu/library. Students and community members using the library computers should read, and are bound by, the Acceptable Use Policy. In Spring 2005, a second lab will open in the new Technology Building.
Computer User Fees
Computer Labs Only students taking a computer class can use computer labs. Schedules of open lab time are posted by each computer lab room. You will need to have a lab pass, which you get from your computer class instructor. The Help Desk is available for technical help with computers and printers, but not for homework help. Tutoring and/or homework help is available at the Academic Support Center on the second floor of Holman Library . The Acceptable Use Policy (mentioned above) also covers computer labs and can be found at www.greenriver.edu/library.
Conveniences A U.S. Bank machine is located in the Lindbloom Student Center, lower level, next to the cafeteria entrance.
Copiers Self-service, coin-operated photocopiers are located in Holman Library and on the second floor of the Lindbloom Student Center. The cost is 10 cents per copy.
Fax A fax machine is available for use in the bookstore. The cost is $1.00 per page.
Emergencies Twenty-four-hour campus safety is provided at GRCC. In case of an emergency: If life-threatening: Dial 9, and then wait for tone. Dial 9-1-1 for King County Police or fire. From a pay phone: Dial 9-1-1, then call the Campus Safety Office at (253) 288-3350.If you call 9-1-1, be sure to call the Campus Safety Office next. When emergency personnel reach campus, they need to be directed to the site of the emergency by the Campus Safety Office. Also, all campus pay telephones are equipped with a security button, which when pushed, directly calls the Campus Safety Office. If non-life threatening, dial ext. 2250 for the Campus Safety Office. From a pay phone: Press Security button at no cost or dial (253) 288-3350. Campus Safety Office can also help students in other emergency situations. Emergency school closures Classes may be cancelled or delayed in case of snow, extreme cold or other emergency situations. Announcements regarding emergency school closure will be made by local TV and radio stations. For closure information, please access the following Web site: www.schoolreport.org.
Facility After-Hours Passes Instructors can allow students access to areas on campus outside of regular hours. Here’s how it works: The instructor notifies the Campus Safety Office by sending a class roster or by e-mail. When you want access to the area, you must go to the Campus Safety Office, where prior authorization will be verified. Photo identification is required. If no Campus Safety Staff is immediately available, please use the phone just outside the main door of the Administration Building.
Fitness and Wellness Center & Weight Room Fitness and Wellness Center (F&WC) usage is free to students during posted “open” hours. The F&WC is located between the gymnasium and International Programs. Aerobic equipment includes StairMasters, stepmills, treadmills, rowing machines, Nordic Tracks, Cybex recumbent bicycles, stationary bicycles, Reebok elliptical trainers, and a Versaclimber. The weight room, located in the gymnasium, offers a full array of Nautilus equipment and free weights. Requirements: sign-in as you enter, wear athletic shoes and attire, and use equipment as directed. Classes for credit are also offered in the F&WC and the gymnasium. Green River Community College Foundation The Green River Community College Foundation exists to enhance the mission and goals of the College through developing positive community relations and securing private funding to advance educational opportunities in the community. It is a stand-alone, nonprofit organization. The Foundation places emphasis on recognizing the success of GRCC students and alumni, developing community partners to invest in college programs, and establishing private contributions to fund scholarships and other worthwhile campus needs. Each spring, the Foundation awards approximately 100 scholarships to students. Go the the Foundation Scholarships web page for the current deadline.
Helen S. Smith Gallery The college is proud to feature the Helen S. Smith Gallery on the main floor of the Holman Library. Art exhibits presented throughout the year are free. An art show featuring the works of GRCC faculty has become a semi-annual gallery highlight. Painting, photography, ceramics, multimedia pieces and sculptures represent a cross-section of art media exhibited at the gallery. Stop by and enjoy this campus resource and watch for the student exhibit at the end of each academic year.
Information Center The center provides campus tours, information and sign up for GRCC activities, student computer kiosks, sign up for new student orientation sessions, and other general information on programs and services offered at the college. Color copies for classes can also be purchased at the info center.
Insurance Washington community colleges offer a Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan. You are eligible if you are a regularly enrolled student registered for six or more credits per quarter. In addition, certain dependants of eligible students may be insured. Application forms are available at the Cashier’s Office.
Library Holman Library provides library services for students and the community. In addition to traditional print journals, magazines, and books, thousands of magazines and journals are offered electronically and are accessible to students from home. A librarian is on duty to answer questions, in person or by phone, whenever the library is open. Library hours are available at www.greenriver.edu/library. The Information Commons, an open computer lab for students, is on the second floor. The library also houses a student tutoring center, the Helen S. Smith Gallery, and archaeological displays. Lindbloom Student Center The Lindbloom Student Center is at the heart of campus life and activity. Located adjacent to the Performing Arts Building, the LSC is often the place to be for activities and entertainment. In addition, the espresso cart and vending machines are available for students on the go. With a performance stage and meeting rooms, the LSC is a favorite meeting place among students and staff alike.
Lockers You may wish to rent a locker during the quarter for textbooks or personal belongings. Locker rental is $5 per quarter, $17 per year. You provide your own lock. Lockers are located just inside the lower main entrance of the Lindbloom Student Center.
Lost and Found What happens if you leave something on campus or forget it? Is there hope of seeing it again? Certainly. Check the lost and found desk at the Campus Safety Office in the Administration Building. Found items are logged in and kept until two weeks after the end of each quarter. Every effort is made to contact the owner; items left behind after the holding period are donated to Goodwill Industries. Additional Campus Locations
Enumclaw Campus The Enumclaw Campus is an extension campus of GRCC located in downtown Enumclaw, 15 miles south of Auburn. Instructional programs include: credit classes, adult basic education, GED, Running Start, business and career education, self-paced lab classes, distance learning, and non-credit community education classes. Student services and programs such as student orientation, registration, advising, placement testing, and women’s programs are also offered at various times throughout the quarter.
Kent Campus The Kent Campus serves the training and development needs of private and public sector employers. The training and education offered at the Center includes network administration, Cisco, Internet Web Manager, A+ computer support technician, PC software applications, fiber optics, LAN cabling, and business.
Continuing Education Continuing Education programs at GRCC help people retrain for employment, learn new skills, explore different fields, and update techniques for a career or a favorite pastime. Classes and seminars are conveniently scheduled for adults, during the evening hours and on weekends on the main campus and at various Green River locations in Enumclaw and Kent, at the SuperMall and at local public schools. The Quarterly Class Schedule features all Continuing Education courses.
Parking and Transportation You are responsible for your own transportation to campus. Parking lots are located on the east and west sides of campus. We encourage you to ride the bus, carpool, or use the shuttle from Pacific Raceways. Each of the transportation programs offers promotional prizes and rewards.
Bus Passes (Metro) Metro offers two hourly service routes to the college. Bus Route 164 runs from downtown Kent to the East Hill on its way to GRCC. Bus Route 181 runs from Federal Way, through downtown Auburn, and on to the college. A transportation board, posted with bus route maps, transportation guides, and bus schedules, is located on the first floor of the Lindbloom Student Center. To purchase a monthly Metro Bus Pass or Metro Coupon Book with individual bus tickets, stop by the Cashier’s Office. The first 300 students per quarter (200 summer quarter) purchasing a Metro Bus Pass will receive a subsidy of $20 toward that purchase. You will be asked to present your student I.D. card at the time of purchase.
Carpool Information Each time you carpool to GRCC, pick up a Carpool Pass at the Welcome Booth or the Campus Safety Office. Two people must be in the vehicle to receive a Carpool Pass, and your vehicle must be registered with the college. Carpool spaces are reserved until 10:30 a.m. However, reserved parking is not assured. You can get your facilities fee refunded by carpooling. Each quarter, save your carpool passes and turn them into Student Programs by the last day of instruction for a possible refund. Reimbursement forms are available in Student Programs. If you would like to participate in a carpool and want help locating others with whom to share the ride, contact Fred Creek at the Campus Safety Office in the Administration Building or pick up a Metro Ride Match form in Lindbloom Student Center.
Parking and Traffic Guidelines Students may park their vehicles in any general unmarked stall. Students are required to register their cars. The College has designated parking spaces for carpool, disabled persons, motorcycles and staff. Additional off-campus parking is available at the Family of Grace Lutheran Church, a few blocks north of the college. The campus speed limit is 10 miles per hour. Parking and speeding infractions will be enforced. Questions pertaining to parking should be directed to the Campus Safety Office.
Phones Indoor public (pay) telephones are located in the Lindbloom Student Center, Holman Library, SMT, and PE buildings. Outdoor public (pay) telephones are located north of the Administration Building, southwest of the Holman Library, and east of the OEA Building.
Emergency telephones that automatically ring
the Campus Safety Office Phones are located in the SMT, Holman Library and Lindbloom Student Center elevators. These will automatically ring through to the Campus Safety Office. TTY phones are available. Please contact Disability Support Services in LSC-126 for information on this service.
Recreation Desk The Recreation Desk sells candy, gum, and juice. There are up-to-date video games available from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Pool tables may be rented on an hourly basis at $5.00 an hour. Hours:
Scheduling Office If you would like to reserve a specific room for a club meeting or special event, please contact the Scheduling Office. The staff will check the existing calendar of events, verify availability for the room, and schedule your meeting or event. The date and time for your meeting must be reserved in advance and approved by the Scheduling Office.
Campus Safety Office The Campus Safety Office is located in the Administration Building, at the main entrance.
Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However,
security personnel are available 24 hours a day at extension 3350/2250.
Also, all campus pay telephones are equipped with a security button, which
when pushed, directly calls the Campus Safety Office The Campus Safety Office assists with emergency aid, patrols parking lots, takes the lead in crime prevention and investigation, makes security checks of campus buildings at night and oversees after-hours facility access. The Campus Safety Office will also render assistance such as jump-starting your car or helping you get into your car if you’ve locked yourself out. Skateboarding and inline skating are not allowed on campus. Bicyclists are required to wear helmets while riding. Since the college is located in unincorporated King County, it relies on King County for police and fire protection. the Campus Safety Office works closely with both agencies.
Reporting crimes GRCC takes a proactive approach to informing the campus community-both students and employees-when a serious crime or pattern of criminal activity takes place on campus. In releasing information, the Campus Safety Office works with the Public Information Office to ensure that correct information is released through the proper channels, which include all-campus bulletins, e-mail, fliers, student publications, The Current, and the community media.
Preventive programs DEANS & DIVISIONS Academic and Professional /Technical programs at the college are organized into divisions. Each division includes several subject areas and is headed by a dean. The following is a list of all instructional deans and the subjects they oversee.
