Green River College to launch educational opportunities in Covington

Photo of the Covington Library building exteriorGreen River College will offer free workshops and lectures, as well as a for-credit course, at the Covington Library (27100 164th Ave SE, Covington, WA 98042) this spring.

The workshops and lectures are free and open to the public. No RSVP or library membership is required to attend.

According to Sandra Davidson, Covington and SE King Country Program Manager at Green River College, the program aims to provide community members the resources needed to reach their goals, whether that is to get a promotion at work, finish a stalled degree or learn a new skill.

“There is a need for training and education in the community to help individuals take their next step in life,” Davidson said. “It’s exciting to offer new opportunities within our local community and south-east King County.”

Covington City Manager Regan Bolli agrees and sees the endeavor as a chance for community members to better they employment and life overall.

“This program is a tool and an asset for our community and those around our community,” Bolli said. “We have a lot of people that started school and then for whatever life reason had to stop... We hope this is an opportunity to go back to school and finish their education.”

The inaugural workshop, entitled “New Year, New Career,” will take place 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on March 22. Faculty from Green River’s Business, Law and Education Division to join attendees to facilitate a discussion about taking the next step in one’s career, and what trainings are available.

Other topics include crime prevention and identify theft, hands on forensic exercise, and more.  Green River will also offer its first for-credit class in Covington, with “MUSC& 105: Music Appreciation” starting April 10. The class will introduce students to the music of the great master composters, beginning with the elements of music and processing through the common style periods.

The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon until June 15. Those interested can learn more and register at www.greenriver.edu/covington.

Workshops, lectures and classes are offered in partnership with the Covington Chamber of Commerce, the Covington City Council, the King County Library System, Kent School District, and the Economic Development Council.
