Alumni Story: Je Seung You, South Korea

By Andrew Turgeon, Manager, International Student Advising: Programming & University Partnerships, March 19, 2018

Je Seung You (a.ka. Jason) visited me last week. Jason is currently studying at Columbia University, double majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science.  He has only been there for one semester and is already so involved!

  • He was selected as the only transfer student to participate in the Columbia Organization for Rising Entrepreneurs specialized immersion program for first year Columbia students.  Every Wednesday he attends a lecture and every Friday his group goes down to Manhattan to meet with various start-up companies.  He loves it!
  • He will be interning this summer at a start-up called Locasaur, helping them to design their mobile app.
  • He was able to transfer 60 semester credits from Green River to Columbia.
  • He feels that his classes at Columbia are just as good as at Green River.  The only big difference he felt was that Columbia gives WAY more homework.

When I asked Jason how Green River prepared him to transfer, he said that he learned “how to interact with all kinds of people”.  He was a member of PTK and worked at the Math Learning Center and as a Peer Mentor.  From these experiences, he felt that he learned how to start up conversations with different kinds of people and not be afraid to be the first person to say “hello. How are you?”.  He recommended that all Green River Coege students get involved because, as he said, “academics won’t last forever but social skills will!”

I think this really speaks to the importance of relationship building that we at Green River value so much.
