message by Ross Jennings, Vice
President of International Programs
"After a quiet summer, everyone is here! Our old students are back from vacation, rested and ready to go for another year. Our new students are getting over culture shock and settling in for their first quarter. It’s always exciting when our kids come back.
We are delighted that this year,
so many of our graduating
international students transferred
to
top 100 world universities.
Every year, our international students transfer to the University of Washington, UCLA, Indiana, Michigan, UC Berkeley, Ohio State, USC, and dozens of other top US universities. We just found out that
our graduate Julia Chin just received a full-ride Fulbright scholarship to study for a PhD in microbiology at any US university she chooses, after she finishes the master’s degree she is currently working on. She was a
High School Completion Plus
student – she came to GRCC before finishing high school back home – and transferred to UCLA. We’re very proud of Julia, and of all of our great students at GRCC.
Green River also earned two prestigious rankings during the last year. For the second year in a row, it ranked in the
top 20 of the almost 1,200 US community and technical colleges in international student enrollment. In addition,
Washington Monthly magazine recently ranked
Green River among the top 30 community colleges
in overall quality. Moreover, University of Washington President
Mark Emmert, a GRCC transfer himself, spoke at our commencement in June 2010. He
indicated how well his foundation at Green River prepared him for academic success and eventually the presidency of one of the world’s top 20 universities.
