Green River College Responds to Disaster in Japan

From all of us here at Green River, we want to express our deep concern and sympathy for everyone affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Our hearts go out to our Japanese friends—agents, students and their families.

When the earthquake hit, we had 74 Japanese students studying at Green River. Only one student ultimately returned home. 32 new students from Japan arrived at the end of March as planned to start their studies at Green River for spring quarter.

Immediately following the disaster, we did our best to help anyone with loved ones in Japan to connect with them, as well as provide counseling, news, snacks and tea in our office for Japanese students. Julia Short, a practical nursing instructor, kindly brought over snacks, tea, and other comfort items as well.

Our Japanese students, assisted by the Association of Chinese Culture, set up a donation station in the Student Center and raised money for the Japanese Red Cross. Our cafeteria also joined efforts to raise money for Japan by donating money from lunches sold during the first week of spring quarter. Here is an article from our student newspaper, The Current: Disaster Hits Home.

Ross Jennings, Vice President for International Programs, summarized it well: “This outpouring of support reminds us that we are all truly one community. Sometimes it takes a disaster to nudge us to rally around our brothers and sisters in need in another part of the world, and remind us that we’re all in the same leaky boat together.”
