Student Activities

Our trips encourage students to explore Seattle and enjoy
the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Our Student Programs staff and student leaders are dedicated to providing activities for international students. They organize a wide variety of activities on campus. They also host off-campus trips that encourage students to explore Seattle and enjoy the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Weekend trips include: whale watching, river rafting, biking, snowboarding or skiing, ice skating, camping, and sampling international cuisine at various Seattle restaurants. These activities are open to all students and provide an opportunity for international students and U.S. students to meet each other.

Each academic quarter, you can read about planned activities in the Student Programs Activities and Events Calendars.

Student Government:

Student Government is the student's voice on campus. Student Government handles student complaints, provides funding for campus clubs, athletics, and activities, and reports directly to the administration about student needs.

Athletics:

There are a number of varsity athletic teams, which compete and travel in Washington and Oregon. Try-outs are required to play on these teams.

If you are not interested in playing on a varsity team, but love sports, intramural sports are for you! Intramural sports are held on campus, usually at the noon hour. Teams are formed by students, faculty, and staff on campus. Once teams are established, a schedule is set for the quarter. It is a great way to play soccer, basketball, volleyball, or do aerobics in a fun, relaxed environment.

Clubs:

Campus clubs are organized by students with common interests, hobbies, or career goals. Campus clubs offer a comfortable environment for students to meet one another. Clubs usually meet weekly on campus and everyone is welcome to join at anytime. A list of clubs is available in Student Programs.

Community, Leadership, Education and Outreach (C.L.E.O)

This group of students is responsible for programming events on and off campus, and they also act as ambassadors for the college. Each spring, interviews are held to find potential student leaders to join this group. CLEO students are paid to work full-time in the summer, then during the school year they work part-time and go to school full-time.

Peer Volunteers:

There are many opportunities to volunteer as a peer mentor. A peer mentor introduces new international students to Green River Community College and the surrounding area. As a continuing student you will be able to share your experience and welcome new friends.

Conversation Partners:

Conversation Partners allows international students and U.S. students to meet once a week for one hour to converse in English in a supportive environment.

International Festival:

This annual springtime event gives International Students the opportunity to share their culture with the campus and the community by designing displays featuring dress, food, and other cultural items from their home country.

Performing Arts:

If you want to explore and develop your skills in drama and music, Green River offers several options. Theatre Extempore is a credit class and is a theater tailored to adults. Auditions are held the first week of each academic quarter. Green River is also home to Heavier Than Air Family Theatre, a community theater which is open to everyone. These two theaters present about six shows per year. If you enjoy singing, you can sign up for the college choir, or audition for our Rendezvous Vocal Jazz Ensemble, which are both credit classes.

Artists & Speakers:

Green River is committed to providing cultural and educational opportunities to the community. The Artists & Speakers Series brings interesting speakers and exciting entertainers. Past artists and speakers have included: Dr. Joyce Brothers, jazz great Diane Schurr, country artist Jo Dee Messina, as well as Dr. Beck Weathers, one of the survivors of the 1996 disaster on Mt. Everest.

Area Activities:

Being close to a major U.S. city allows Green River's students access to events and activities in the area beyond the campus, including outstanding attractions, restaurants, shopping, and sports events in the Seattle area.
