English for university and academic preparation

The Intensive English program at Green River College is a great way to learn for students who are not yet at an academic level in English.

Levels 1 - 3: Basic Skill Development - Kent Campus
Students focus on strengtening their basic English skills in the first three levels of English classes. These classes are held at our Kent Campus.
Levels 4 - 5: Academic Prep - Main Campus
Students focus on getting ready for Academic classes in level four and five. These classes are held on the main Green River College campus in Auburn.

There are 5 levels in the program, which go from level 1 (Basic) to level 5 (Academic Support). Every level can be completed in one quarter (around three months). The instructors teach grammar, writing, reading, listening and speaking. When students arrive at Green River, they will take a placement test that determines which level they will take. If they get a very high score, students could be allowed to take the COMPASS test and start academic classes right away. Students who have a TOEFL score of at least 61/173/500 or IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0 ) do not have to enroll in the Instensive English program and can take academic classes. For more information, see our Intensive English page.

After the Program

After completing the Intensive English program, students can move directly into academic classes at Green River, apply to other U.S. colleges or universities, or go back home with great English skills that can help them in their studies, run their own business or other jobs. Graduates of Intensive English have transferred to the University of Washington, University of Southern California, Purdue University, and many other excellent and prestigious American universities.
