Edwin Sanjaya is one of Green
River's top engineering students.
Edwin Sanyaya
is from Indonesia.
According to Jeff McCauley,
Engineering Instructor, Edwin is one
of the top engineering students at
GRCC. His goal is to major in
Aeronautical Engineering and
transfer to MIT.
Why did you choose to study at
Green River Community College?
"My father wanted me to go to
community college for my first two
years (to save money). My father
chose Green River Community College
because my sister,
Devina Sanjaya, had a great
experience and great achievements at
GRCC."
Devina also majored in
Aeronautical Engineering and is
currently a senior at the
University of Michigan Ann
Arbor.
Also, GRCC offers a lot of scholarship opportunities
for students every year through GRCC
Foundation and International
Programs. "I received 3 scholarships
for a total of $5,000:
Paul G. Dong Memorial Scholarship
for engineering students from GRCC
Foundation, and two scholarships
from International Programs
(Achievement, Merit, & Leadership
Scholarships for new GRCC students
and Achievement Scholarship for
current GRCC students)."
"I also work part-time on campus
which gives me extra money and work
experience. Currently I work as a Math tutor at the
Math Learning Center for four hours
a week, as a Math Grader for GRCC
Math Division for five hours a week,
and as an Economics tutor for six
hours a week."
What are your thoughts about
GRCC's Engineering Program?
"GRCC's Engineering program is
really good. The instructors are
really helpful and they give us a lot
of good advice and use real life
examples.
ENGR 100 - Careers in
Engineering was very helpful.
In this class we created a degree
plan. We learn what classes we
need to take in order to transfer
into our selected major."
Jeff McCauley is my
Engineering instructor and advisor.
He goes out of his way to help me
succeed. Currently he is helping me
apply for the
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship.
'This scholarship provides up to
$30,000 per year to each of
approximately 50 deserving students
selected annually, making it the
largest private scholarship
for two-year and community college
transfer students in the country.'"
"GRCC has an Engineering Club known as American Society of Mechanical Engineer (ASME). There are
a lot of projects that students can
get involved in, such as CO2 cars races, mini catapults,
building a rocket, etc. The club is open
to all students at GRCC, so even if you are not an engineering students, you still can join the club."
Do you have any other thoughts
you'd like to share about GRCC?
"GRCC is a really good place to
study. I like living near trails
where I can walk and enjoy the
beauty of Mount Rainier. It really
helped me to clear my mind my first
9 months here."
GRCC is a diverse learning
community. Lots of GRCC students are
from different backgrounds, and if
we get involved on campus, we can
meet so many people, and improve our
communication skills.
