AANHPI Heritage Month

May | Honoring Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

First established in 1978 as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week, the celebration was expanded to "Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month” in 1990. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Join GRC as we explore the evolution of the names used to solidify a movement and combat the history of American Imperialism and modern racist stereotypes.

Arab American Heritage Month

April | A Guide to Celebrating Arab American Heritage in Education

Green River’s Arab Student Association upholds the importance of Arab American Heritage Month. As a group whose narrative is often misconstrued, we believe it is crucial to spend time understanding and learning about Arab American identity and culture. This month, we plan to work with our peers and organizations such as the Muslim Student Association (MSA), KGRG-FM, and the Holman Library to promote understanding and celebrate Arab identity.

The National Women’s History Month’s theme for 2024 celebrates Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The theme recognizes women throughout the country who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions.

During the month of February, we commemorate Black History Month, recognizing the enduring contributions, leadership, activism, and resilience of Black and African American individuals both past and present within Green River College, SE King County, and the nation.

While Black History Month is observed nationally annually, Black history is American history and members of the Black community at GRC make a difference every day of the year.
