About Us

College week of Veterans Day observances to end Saturday

All interested staff, faculty and students who would like to honor our veterans' service are welcome to join us in the last two events in honor of Veterans both on and off campus.

SOS Veterans Breakfast, Nov. 9, in the LC, Glacier Room 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Join Green River Community College in the Auburn Veterans Day Parade, Nov. 10, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

As of 2011, there were 21.5 million military veterans in the United States, of which 9.2 million are ages 65 and older, 1.8 million are younger than 35.  Of the total number of veterans, 7.5 million are from the Vietnam-era, and 5.1 million have served during the Gulf War (representing service from August 2, 1990 to present).

One familiar definition of a Veteran penned by an anonymous author is  that "A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Whether a veteran served or is serving their military career stateside or on the front lines of battle each made a commitment to serve and defend our nation regardless of the ultimate price they might pay. As individuals and as a Nation we are asked to reflect on the value of their commitment and sacrifice on Nov. 11 and as we observe the holiday on Nov. 12.
