Information Commons

Open Computer Lab

The open computer lab in the Information Commons

The Information Commons is an open computer lab located on the second floor of the Holman Library Building.

During open hours the Information Commons Reference Desk is staffed by Faculty Librarians who are available to help with information and research. Student workers provide additional technology and computing assistance.

Computers

The open computer lab in the Information Commons

More than 150 computers are available for use by currently registered students in the library Information Commons. The computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and provide access to various online research databases, course-related specialized software, Microsoft Office and full Internet access.

The library also provides wireless access for your laptop.

All computer and college network users are subject to the Student Acceptable Computer Use Policy.

Printing

In order to reduce the impact of paper use and printing on our environment, the default on all printers in the Information Commons is set to print two-sided pages.

  • If you would like help printing single-sided pages, please ask a librarian or student assistant for help.

Print Allocation

At the beginning of each quarter, all currently enrolled students receive a print allocation credit of 500 points. Points are automatically debited every time you print. 

  • Black & white prints are one point for each piece of paper.
  • Color prints are 10 points.
  • Posters are 100 points.
  • Unused points accumulate from quarter to quarter. If you do not attend GRCC for 6 months, your account will be deleted and all accumulated points lost.

You may add points to your account by purchasing $1, $5, or $10 print cards (10, 50, and 100pts) at the Paper Tree Bookstore or at the Kent Campus.

Wireless Users...

You will not be able to print using the wireless network. You must use a GRCC computer to print your work.

Wireless Access

You must have a current GRCC account and password to access the wireless network. Follow the instructions for your preferred browser:

Internet Explorer

To browse the Green River site: Launch the browser and connect to the Library home page or the Green River home page.

To browse "outside" websites:

  • Go to a site outside of the Green River website such as Google.com.
  • A screen appears that seems like an error page, but gives you a choice to do something like "connect anyway". This choice says "not recommended," but select this choice.
  • The next screen will appear with boxes to login with user name and password (same as SID, password for other library machines). Login here for full wireless access to the web.
  • Make sure you have already set your password on a GRCC computer before attempting to login!
Firefox version 2 or below

To browse the Green River site: Launch the browser and connect to the Library home page or the Green River home page.

To browse "outside" websites:

  • Go to a site outside of the Green River website such as Google.com.
  • When a certificate notice appears, accept it permanently or temporarily.
  • The next screen will appear with boxes to login with user name and password (same as SID, password for other library machines). Login here for full wireless access to the web.
  • Make sure you have already set your password on a GRCC computer before attempting to login!
Firefox version 3

To browse the Green River site: Launch the browser and connect to the Library home page or the Green River home page.

To browse "outside" websites:

  • Go to a site outside of the Green River website such as Google.com.
  • When a box appears that says "Secure Connection Failed." At the bottom of the box, click the link that says "Or you can add an exception…".

  • Click Add Exception at the next prompt.

  • Accept the certificate permanently or temporarily if it appears.

  • The next screen will appear with boxes to login with user name and password (same as SID, password for other library machines). Login here for full wireless access to the web.
  • Make sure you have already set your password on a GRCC computer before attempting to login!
