GRCC Student SAF Chapter Takes National and State Awards |
Green River's student chapter
of the Society of American Foresters won two awards at the national convention
in Portland.
Green River Community College’s student chapter of the Society of American Foresters (SAF) won two awards at last week’s national convention in Portland. The GRCC unit was named national Student Chapter of the Year and Washington State Chapter of the Year. Last year, Green River’s student chapter tied with Mississippi State University for the national award. In addition to walking away with the top honors, Green River’s SAF team also co-hosted the student activities at the convention with Oregon State University. The conference included field trips for students on topics such as forest health, urban forestry and Mount St. Helens. The convention was attended by 18 student members in the GRCC chapter. Co-advisor Dick Hopkins and SAF chapter chair Jenny Wren were presenters on an educational panel with the deans of the forestry colleges of the University of Washington and Oregon State University. Program InformationStudents in Green River’s Natural Resources program can earn an Associated in Applied Science degree with a variety of emphasis including forestry technology, GIS, park management, water quality, and Wildland fire.
