Advising Expectations for Students
Purpose of Advising Appointments
Academic advising at Green River College is designed to support student success by
helping you understand degree requirements, create academic plans, and connect you
with campus resources.
Before the Appointment
- Prepare Questions and Materials: Bring any relevant documents, including your degree audit, transcripts, and a list of questions or topics you want to discuss.
- Review Academic Progress: Check your academic progress and academic plan through Navigate, and course prerequisites in your student portal to be informed about your status.
- Arrive on Time: Punctuality shows respect for your advisor's time and allows you to make the most of your session. If you're running late or need to reschedule, please notify the advising center in advance.
During the Appointment
- Active Participation: Engage in the conversation, ask questions, and share your academic goals and challenges openly.
- Decision-Making: Advisors provide guidance, but you are ultimately responsible for making decisions about your educational path.
- Professional Communication: Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor during the meeting.
After the Appointment
- Follow-Up Actions: Complete any recommended tasks, such as registering for classes, monitoring your academic plan and degree progress, contacting faculty, or visiting support services.
- Check Emails: Monitor your student email for any follow-up communication from your advisor.
- Stay Connected: Schedule follow-up appointments as needed to stay on track with your academic goals.
Additional Information & Expectations
- Advising appointments are typically 60 minutes long and are scheduled through Navigate.
- If you are more than 10 minutes late your advising appointment will need to be rescheduled
- If you need to cancel or reschedule, please do so at least 24 hours in advance, if possible, by either calling Career and Advising Center or canceling the appointment through your confirmation email.
- Advising appointment confirmations, ZOOM links and communication regarding your advising appointment are all done through your student email. Please be sure to check this regularly including the day of your appointment to receive the ZOOM link and any other instructions.
- Drop-in appointments are typically offered on Fridays from 9:30 to 4p.m. on campus and virtually Mondays & Thursdays 11-1 p.m. Due to the high demand for student appointments we are not usually able to accommodate drop-in appointments on other days or times outside of our scheduled drop-in hours.
