Directed Self-Placement (DSP) - Chemistry
Directed self-placement is a process that helps you make an informed decision about your Chemistry course placement. It gives you the information you need to choose a course that fits your background, academic goals, and level of preparation. Starting in the right course can help you avoid unnecessary stress, frustration, or repeating material you already know—or enrolling in a class that feels too advanced.
Here’s how the DSP works:
Understanding Your Needs: Directed self-placement asks you to reflect honestly on your knowledge of chemistry concepts, problem-solving skills, and any prior coursework (such as high school chemistry). You’ll consider how prepared you feel for college-level chemistry and what type of learning environment will best support your success.
Survey Participation: You’ll complete a self-guided survey that takes about 30 minutes. It includes questions about your experience with chemistry topics, math readiness, and confidence in applying scientific concepts. This helps you evaluate your current skills and understand what to expect in college-level chemistry courses.
Course Recommendation: Based on your responses, you’ll receive a recommendation for your first chemistry course. Options may vary depending on your background and goals. These recommendations are not required—they are meant to guide your decision. You are encouraged to review your results with an academic advisor to choose the course that best fits your academic path.
Placement Recommendations
Upon completing the Chemistry DSP, you will receive a course recommendation for either CHEM&161 or CHEM&140. This recommendation will be added to your ctcLink account as a milestone.
To receive Chemistry placement, you must either complete the DSP, submit a college transcript, or submit AP scores for evaluation. High school transcripts cannot be used to determine Chemistry placement.
Who is Eligible to take the DSP
All Green River students are eligible to complete the Chemistry DSP. To enroll in your Chemistry course, you will also need to have the appropriate English and math placement.
Please Note: The Chemistry DSP is only valid for placement at Green River College, it cannot be used for placement at other colleges or for union or apprenticeship programs.
