Recreational Sports at Green River College
By Jennifer Joy, International Recreation Coordinator, October 3, 2018
Here at Green River College we provide a strong foundation of extracurricular student activities to build a well-rounded college experience. In addition to the many clubs and events on campus, the recreational sports program is also a popular choice.
Three team sports are offered - men’s basketball, men’s soccer, and co-ed volleyball – in addition to non-team sports such as swimming, badminton, and ultimate frisbee. Students pay a very low cost to join the team, and Green River College provides jerseys and roundtrip transportation to every game. The sport seasons last for one quarter, so some students like to try it out for just one quarter, others come back every quarter!
Recreational sports are open to all students; it’s a wonderful way for international students and local students to create long lasting friendships and cultural understandings. Over the past two quarters, spring and summer quarter 2018, 62% of our participating students were international students, and 38% were local students. Since sports are a universal hobby that needs little language, it is an easy and natural way for international students to connect with one another. The Green River recreational sports program has involved students from Japan, China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Tunisia, Brazil, Taiwan, Denmark, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Cote D’Ivoire, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Netherlands, South Korea, Pakistan, Cameroon, and more.
The recreational sports program looks forward to welcoming new students and expanding our program!
