ICE's Reverse Decision is a Victory for International Students

By Dr. Suzanne Johnson, President of Green River College and Wendy Stewart, Vice President of International Programs and Extended Learning, July 16, 2020

Great news! As you probably heard, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement reversed (canceled) the July 6 rule that would have prevented international students from staying in the U.S. and taking all online classes this fall.

Eighteen states, including Washington state, sued the Department of Homeland Security over the rule. Green River College submitted a strong statement to support the legal challenge.

What this means for our students for fall 2020:

  1. Students can take all of their fall 2020 classes online.
  2. This is true if students choose to study in the US or in their home country.
  3. Students do not need to take the special IP class International Student Health & Support.

IP staff will continue to reach out to our students to determine where they are studying and what their plans are for fall. That information will help us to provide customized, individual support for them.

I want you to know that our entire college, our local community, and leaders throughout Washington State stand with our international students. We want you to know the following:

  • International Students are welcome here!
  • We appreciate their contribution in class, on campus, and in the community.
  • We are dedicated to their success and to the success of all Green River students.

Not sure if you want to study at Green River College in the fall?  Why not try taking one class with us from your home country. This is a very cost-effective way to figure out if GRC is right for you.  See Online Now, On Campus Later for more information.
