Green River College Welcomes New President

Green River College International Programs is pleased to welcome Dr. Suzanne Johnson, the new President of Green River College. Johnson, former Vice President for Academic Affairs at Suffolk County Community College in Long Island, New York, started July 1. She succeeded Interim President Scott Morgan, who was appointed by the Board of Trustees on July 28, 2016.

Johnson began her career in higher education in 1988 as a psychology instructor at Dowling College where she earned seven awards including professor of the year. She then moved through the ranks to become the Dean of the College in 2012. Johnson also served as the Interim Campus President of the Sylvania Campus of Portland Community College in Portland, OR. Johnson has been instrumental in accreditation reviews, providing leadership over both instruction and student affairs, as well as having a deep commitment to the community college mission.

Johnson said that in her time as Interim President at Portland Community College, she fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. To her, it had a civility and rhythm to it, with weather that reminded her of her childhood. She always told herself that if she ever had the opportunity to be able to live her life out, in terms of a region of country, it would be in the Pacific Northwest.

The Board of Trustees chose Johnson as the next Green River College president from a pool of 36 applicants. A 12-member Presidential Search Committee chaired by Interim President Morgan, included trustees, faculty, staff, students, and community members who volunteered their time to screen applications and recommend finalists to the Board of Trustees.

New Housing Policy for 16-year-old Students – Required Fall 2017

Green River College is committed to the academic and personal success of all our students. Living in a vetted and approved host family affords young students the opportunity to be well supported and secure while making the transition into college life.

Starting now, we strongly recommend that younger students live in a Green River host family. Beginning Fall Quarter 2017, all students the age of 16 at quarter start date will be required to live with a Green River host family until they are 17 years old.

We believe that living in a safe, supportive environment is essential to a younger student’s health, happiness, and success, both socially and academically.
