Peter Berg Takes a Gap Year Before Heading to Law School

By Peter Berg , May 23, 2023

Hi, my name is Peter.

I’m 21 years old and I’ve spent a gap year/nine months at Green River College in the city of Auburn which is located south of Seattle, in the state of Washington. It has been an incredibly transformative experience for me because I know that I’ve developed and improved personally, academically, and naturally in my English abilities.

My idea of studying for a period at Green River College was because I’d just graduated from high school in Denmark and was actually set to attend law school at the University of Copenhagen after the end of the summer. However, I thought that the concept of heading straight to law school after completing three long years of high school seemed at bit overwhelming, as I wanted to perform my best if I was to attend such a challenging academic endeavor, and additionally, I was just longing to relax a bit after the woes of the Covid-19 period. So, I made the decision, last minute, to go to the US as I’ve always been fascinated by American culture, values, ideals, and of course the country’s unparalleled diversity.

I chose Green River College because it was more economically viable option than the traditional four-year colleges here in the US. (See cost comparison chart) Which noticeably more expensive than attending a community college, and therefore, I decided that it wouldn’t make sense to not choose that option for a limited period. Furthermore, I also decided on Green River because it is located in Washington, a state renowned for it’s breathtaking natural scenery, which includes Mt. Rainier in the Cascade Mountains, Snoqualmie Falls, etc.

On another note, Green River has a great focus on Study Abroad programs. I have been fortunate enough to spend a quarter in Rome through one of these programs, which is just one of the many destinations that are offered. Others include, Peru, Hawaii, California, Australia/New Zealand, South Korea, and the list goes on! In these study abroad programs you will also receive academic credits as you will attend lectures and classes there like you would normally, often with subjects relevant to the country you’re studying in.

Lastly, I would like to tell you that if you’re sitting and considering taking a gap year in the US or maybe even obtaining an associate degree, then I’d strongly recommend Green River College. As it is a great place if you want to experience the Pacific Northwest or if you want to use it as an academic stepping stone for further education in the US, such as the local University of Washington. Good luck!
