Ian Henderson
Transfer School: University of Washington Tacoma

"The challenges I had to face while at Green River College is that I had dropped out of high school in order to help pay the bills in my family.  I faced homelessness and uncertainty about where I would be sleeping each night.  My father also passed away in my final quarter at Green River, as I was finishing up the most work intensive quarters I have ever faced. But, I did not give up. The TRiO staff helped me to figure out my educational plan.  They have been a compass I am grateful for.  TRiO has always been to me a place of refuge from the cold, and at times, impersonal educational landscape.  The people here care for you and want to see you succeed, they are willing to help in any way they can. I have been able to scout universities, get scholarships and figure out my educational future because of TRiO.  This has been incredibly helpful for getting what I need, when I need it so I can focus on school work and not spend too much time working about being able to continue with school."

"Overcoming language and financial barriers has been a challenge for me. I still struggle with both. Before TRiO I didn't have anywhere to go to ask questions and get answers. Now I do. I first heard of TRiO during one of my classes and my first thought was, 'Wow, this program is for me.'  I am the first in my family to go to school, I have no money and I need help. They were helpful and nice to me. I've gotten guidance and answers from everyone in TRiO. TRiO helped me pick courses and decide on a degree. TRiO provided textbooks, tutors and a place to go for help and support in transferring to a 4-year school. I recommend other student not to wait until you are in trouble to ask for help. TRiO staff won't judge you and only wants to help you get your life straightened out."

"Finances were a large barrier for me in completing school. TRiO helped explain what resources were available and how to access them.  I feel like I have a safe place to come and share what is going on with me, without being judged and always being supported. The mere existence of TRiO has been helpful-knowing that I have one place to come to ask questions.  I don't have to jump around to multiple departments to get answers.  TRiO touches upon everything- career advising, advising, tutoring and help with financial aid."

"I am the first person in my family to not only finish high school but also to attend college.  I utilized all the services TRiO had to offer, tutoring, book loan, advising and transfer support.  I learned new study habits and through my work with TRiO began to realize the importance of education and having life goals.  Their support and belief in me made a huge difference in my life and my success."
