Recreational Sports

The recreational sports program at Green River College is an exciting way for students to join competitive sports teams, make friends, have fun and represent the school in recreational leagues throughout the Puget Sound area.

Recreational sports teams are offered each quarter, and are open to all students. No experience is required, just a desire to compete as a team. For more information on the programs listed below contact the Recreation Coordinator Jennifer Joy, or visit the Recreation & Athletics Center (RAC), located in the Student Union.

Men's Soccer

The recreational soccer teams play each quarter in a variety of rec leagues. During the Summer quarter, the team plays in the Starfire Sports outdoor 8v8 league. For Fall and Spring quarters, the team plays in the Greater Seattle Soccer League 11v11 outdoor league. During the Winter quarter, the team plays in the Starfire Sports indoor 6v6 league.

The teams are open to all students ages 16 and over during Fall and Spring. In the Summer and Winter, the teams are open to students ages 18 and over. There are 8 - 10 games each quarter with the team playing once a week, usually 5 p.m. or later.

To join, students pay a fee which includes their uniform, transportation to and from the games as well as all league fees and membership fees.

Men's Basketball

The recreational basketball teams play in local rec leagues during the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. Depending on the league start dates, the team will play in the Renton Community Center Rec Basketball league, or the Puget Sound Basketball league. Both leagues have a score board as well as 2 referees. There are 8 - 10 games each quarter, with the team playing once a week, usually 5 p.m. or later.

The teams are open to all students ages 18 and over. To join, students pay a fee which includes their uniform, transportation to and from the games as well as all league fees and membership fees.

Co-ed Volleyball

The recreational volleyball teams play in local rec leagues during the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. Depending on the league start dates, the team will play in the Renton Community Center Coed Rec Volleyball league, or the Kent Community Center Coed Volleyball league. Both leagues have referees and the season is 8 - 10 games, with the team playing once a week, usually 5 p.m. or later.

The teams are open to all students ages 18 and over. To join, students pay a fee which includes their uniform, transportation to and from the games as well as all league fees and membership fees.

Non-League Sports

Other than soccer, basketball, and volleyball, we also offer opportunities for sports that fall outside the league format.

  • Badminton
Students interested in badminton will have opportunities to participate in tournaments hosted by outside institutions three times per year. There is one tournament each during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. As the time approaches, advertisement is posted throughout the RAC.

  • Ultimate Frisbee
Students interested in ultimate frisbee will have opportunities to play pickup games at the Starfire fields while the weather permits – typically from April through September. During the season, the recreation coordinator will take students to join the pickup game once every other week.

  • Tennis
The availability of tennis is dependent on student demand. As more students ask for tennis programming, the recreation coordinator will take groups of students off campus to tennis courts to play one another.

  • Swimming
The availability of swimming is dependent on student demand. As more students ask for swim programming, the recreation coordinator will take groups of student off campus to a swim facility for open swim time. We do not teach swimming, this would only be for students who already know how to swim.

If you are interested in any of these sports, or if you have ideas for other recreational sports not listed, please contact Jennifer Joy.
