Phi Theta Kappa at Green River College
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. Its purpose is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. The society was founded in 1918 and has grown to include more than 1.2 million members. Green River's Phi Theta Kappa chapter is called Alpha Chi Beta.
Four Hallmarks
Phi Theta Kappa has four hallmarks: scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service. To become a member, you must have a 3.50 or higher GPA, and that is calculated on only college-level courses (generally defined as courses numbered 101 and above). Invitations are sent out quarterly via email to those eligible.
Members have many opportunities to develop leadership skills, such as an officer position or chairing various committees. Fellowship is also an important aspect of Phi Theta Kappa and throughout a school year there are social activities, some include other nearby Phi Theta Kappa chapters.
As for service, Phi Theta Kappa is a dedicated service organization and we participate in activities designed to improve the college and the local community.
Benefits
There are many benefits for Phi Theta Kappa members aside from the hallmark opportunities. Because membership demonstrates a commitment to scholarship, there are many academic scholarships aimed at Phi Theta Kappans.
Some of these include the All-USA Academic Team Scholarship, the Guistwhite Scholarships, National Dean's List scholarships, Nota Bene Scholarships and Honors Institute Scholarships. Also, many four-year institutions offer transfer-scholarships exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members. You can read about specific scholarships available to Phi Theta Kappa members at www.ptk.org.
Phi Theta Kappans are also entitled to wear a stole and tassel at graduation, distinguishing you as an honor society member.
Graduation Regalia
Graduation Regalia includes the tassel, honor cords and stole that you can wear at graduation to let others know of your high academic achievement. You may order regalia directly from Phi Theta Kappa or you may purchase it from the advisor when using your Regalia Points.
Regalia Points are earned by participating in PTK events, such as attending weekly member meetings and assisting in our volunteer efforts. You get 1 Regalia Point for each weekly meeting you attend and you earn 2 Regalia Points for each hour you volunteer. 1 Regalia Point = $1. You could potentially earn enough Regalia Points to get your Graduation Regalia for free, or at least at a reduced cost.
