Patricia Wendy - Recipient of 2019 President's Award

By Lansing Bryan, International Programs, July 11, 2019

In the words of Green River College President Suzanne Johnson, "Each year, staff, faculty, and administrators select an outstanding student to receive the President's Award. This is the highest award presented by this college to a graduating student. This award is presented to a graduate who exhibits success through outstanding citizenship, remarkable personal qualities, and high academic achievement.

"The 2019 President's Award Winner has been an outstanding contributor to the Green River campus community. This student is described by instructors as a 'superb student -- close to perfect' and 'a mathematical powerhouse.' This student is also in a leadership position with Phi Theta Kappa. The advisor of Phi Theta Kappa notes, 'this student is my right hand, and does everything,' including cleaning up graffiti in the community every month. As a peer mentor and a math tutor, the award winner is characterized as 'beyond reliable,' 'attentive to student needs' and 'keenly aware that giving back means relating to others not as skilled as herself.'

Maintaining a 4.0 GPA through the most challenging course of study in engineering and mathematics, this year's award winner exhibits the intellectual fortitude and sense of community that embodies the values of Green River College."

Congratulations to Patricia Wendy for receiving the President's Award.

Patricia Wendy said,  "When I first received an email notifying me of my nomination, I didn’t pay much attention to it as I was so sure there would be another more deserving student whose name will be called out during commencement. Thus, I was so surprised when President Johnson announced my name and even more surprised when I had to give a short speech without prior practice. Aside from the initial shock, I also felt very grateful for all the opportunities I got during my two years in Green River and for all the people I got to work with – particularly all of my instructors and the people who are involved in Phi Theta Kappa, Indonesian Student Organization, Foundation for Success, and the Math Learning Center. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today, and I wouldn’t have had such a memorable two years. If you are reading this, I encourage you to always seek out and take any opportunities that come your way. You never know what great things lie ahead of you!"

Patricia will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in the fall.
